Out & About
Things to do in Fort Augustus
Fort Augustus
In the Village itself there are a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants, a museum, small breeds farm and repeated daily cruises on Loch Ness.
The Boathouse Restaurant is situated on Loch Ness where you can dine in style with views of the expanse of the Loch from your table. Pre-Booking your table is recommended.
There is ample opportunity for walking, fishing and cycling on the many paths that lie along the Great Glen. There is a facility for local bicycle hire. There is an activity centre approximately 6 miles from Fort Augustus that can cater for a range of watersports and activities such as white water rafting, abseiling, windsurfing, kayaking, archery and clay pigeon shooting.
Drumnadrochit
Further afield there is the historic village of Drumnadrochit (18 miles) with the Loch Ness 2000 exhibition. On the road to ‘Drum' is Urquhart Castle , which has stood on the shores of the Loch for 800 years.
Glen Affric & Inverness
Beyond this lies Beauly, Glen Affric and the City of Inverness (35 miles), which is situated at the Moray Firth and the bridge to the Black Isle and beyond.
Spean Bridge
Spean Bridge is situated between here and Fort William. At Spean Bridge you can see the Commando Memorial, and from here you can take the road to beautiful Perthshire, with its wonderful scenery and many castles to visit.
Fort William
South of us is the town of Fort William which is set at the foot of Nevis Range. This holds a leisure centre, Indoor Ice Climbing Arena, Gondola ride (which takes you up Ben Nevis ), Mountain Bike courses, Quad Bike track and a wealth of shops. The steam railway goes from here for a great day out. This is where you can travel over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (where the filming took place for the Harry Potter films) and onto Mallaig on the breathtaking West Coast. As you enter Fort William you will also pass the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle, well worth a visit.
All in all, a fabulous place to base your holiday and experience the magical Western Highlands of Scotland .
